Do You Offer DSL or Cable?

Many people ask if we offer DSL or Cable connections to the Internet. We don't. If you're curious about why, read on...

We offered DSL services for about a year and a half, but finally quit for a few reasons. First and foremost, we couldn't be competitive. There are only a few companies that have the resources to provide their own DSL services (primarily the phone companies plus a couple of others like Covad and DSL.NET). Clearly, we're not big enough to do it ourselves.

That means that we have to resell another provider's services. No real problem with that -- we do it all the time -- but the catch is that the big providers are working hard to win your business for themselves. The wholesale rates that they offer to smaller companies like ours are typically about the same (or even more) than the RETAIL prices they charge if you buy from them direct.

Of course, we could justify a higher price to some degree because we take better care of our customers, but in the final analysis, we couldn't make money on it, and too much of the service provision was out of our hands, so we couldn't control it.

As far as offering cable, well, that's even more difficult. Because of the way cable internet works, there's really no way that we could even resell the service. If you can get cable internet, there's usually only one place: the cable company that services your part of town. There was really never any opportunity for us to offer cable.

If you're looking specifically for a DSL connection, we recommend you check first with BellSouth.NET. They tend to have the broadest coverage in the area.
